Welcome to AIPS

The American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS), established in 1973, is a bi-national research and education organization with a mission to promote academic study of Pakistan in the US and to encourage scholarly exchange between the US and Pakistan.

It is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, autonomous organization and a member of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers.

Updates

Dynamics of Countering Human Trafficking in South Asia

Dr. Hassan Abbas led two “Dynamics of Countering Human Trafficking in South Asia” workshops in Islamabad and Lahore, Pakistan from December 17th-23rd.  They focused on fully understanding the nature and magnitude of human trafficking in the broader South Asian region and were geared towards developing local capacity to counter this challenge as well as studying the dynamics that allow this menace to thrive at a global scale.

9th Annual Pakistan Conference

AIPS is co-sponsored the 9th Annual Pakistan Conference: Spaces of Capital at the University of Michigan on March 30, 2019. This conference brought together vibrant scholars around the intersection of economy and politics. The first panel of the conference dealt with urban infrastructure with a paper by Amen Jaffer (LUMS) on waste management and a paper by Maira Haya (Stanford) on water.

Junior Faculty Training and Exchange Program

AIPS has been hosting Junior Faculty Training and Exchange Programs, funded by the US Embassy in Pakistan. These programs allow a unique series of exchanges between US and Pakistani scholars and institutions. Grantees work to develop a program or series of programs on a variety of different topics to foster a deeper cross-cultural understanding. Award for Excellence in Archaeological Analysis

The Society for American Archaeology recently announced that Dr. J. Mark Kenoyer, a past AIPS president, will receive the Award for Excellence in Archaeological Analysis. This award recognizes the significant global impact and enduring contributions of Dr. Kenoyer's research and teaching to archaeological analysis. Dr.

History Workshops in Pakistan

Robert Nichols, David Gilmartin, and Matthew Cook organized and held two workshops for junior Pakistani scholars working towards PhDs in History. Individual projects were presented and discussed in detail, while workshop sessions also opened conversations about research methods, scholarly literature and argumentation, and recent examples of successfully completed academic History books of interest to scholars, including historians of Pakistan-related issues, themes, and historical perspectives.
